The golden bough : a study in magic and religion

Frazer, James George, Sir, 1854-1941 · 1900 · London : Macmillan · 2 pictures

Sir James George Frazer's comparative study of myth, ritual and magic, published in London by Macmillan in 1900 for scholarly and educated general readers. The two plates reproduce Turner's painting of the Lake Avernus golden bough as a tonal engraving: a sweeping pine, classical ruins, distant lake and small robed figures, useful for misty landscape backgrounds, silhouetted tree shapes and soft grey gradients.
