The greater abbeys of England
A 1908 London survey of English monastic houses written by the Benedictine historian Francis Aidan Gasquet for Chatto & Windus and illustrated in colour by Warwick Goble, aimed at general readers of history and travel. The plates are soft watercolour views of abbey churches, ruins and gatehouses set in trees and meadow, useful for muted green-and-ochre palettes, hazy atmospheric washes and silhouetted Gothic masonry.
