The greater abbeys of England
A topographical survey of England's monastic houses written by the Benedictine historian Francis Aidan Gasquet and published by Dodd, Mead in New York in 1908, aimed at general readers and antiquarian travellers, with colour plates by Warwick Goble. The sixty-six watercolour views show ruined nave arcades, gatehouses and tower silhouettes set in grazed meadow and wooded river valley, painted in soft greens, ochres and grey cloud, useful for muted landscape palettes, hazy horizon gradients and architectural ruin silhouettes.
