The greater abbeys of England

Gasquet, Francis Aidan, 1846-1929 · 1908 · New York, Dodd, Mead and company · 66 pictures

A 1908 popular history of England's monastic houses by the Benedictine scholar Francis Aidan Gasquet, issued in New York by Dodd, Mead for general readers with an interest in antiquities and church history. Sixty-odd watercolour plates, mostly by Warwick Goble, show ruined and surviving abbeys at a distance across meadows and river valleys, with roofless nave arcades, traceried windows and heavy massed foliage under pale washed skies; useful for muted green-and-ochre colour schemes and soft-edged architectural silhouettes.
