Great pictures, as seen and described by famous writers
An anthology of art criticism compiled and translated by Esther Singleton, published by Dodd, Mead in New York in 1899, pairing essays by well-known writers with plates of European paintings for general readers and picture students. The 47 halftone reproductions render altarpieces, allegories and group scenes in soft grey tone, several set inside engraved borders of scrollwork, bead-and-reel or hexagonal frames that can be lifted as ornament apart from the images.
