Greek sculpture and modern art, two lectures delivered to the students of the Royal academy of London
Two lectures given by Charles Waldstein to students at the Royal Academy of London and printed by Cambridge University Press in 1914, arguing the relevance of Greek sculpture to contemporary artists. The 84 halftone plates are museum photographs of marble heads, torsos and relief fragments, lit hard against black grounds so that curls, drapery folds and broken surfaces read as high-contrast shapes useful for silhouettes, masks and grainy monochrome collage.
