The masters and master-pieces of engraving
A popular history of engraving written by Willis O. Chapin and issued by Harper & Bros. in New York in 1894 for collectors and print amateurs. Its 65 plates reproduce old and contemporary engravings and etchings — a hermit among skeletal figures, haloed heads in close crop, draped figures seen through tissue guards — offering deep-shadowed line work, printed captions naming the engraver, and generous plate margins.
