The study and criticism of Italian art
Bernard Berenson's collected essays on attribution and connoisseurship in Italian painting, published in London by G. Bell and Sons in 1901 for scholars, collectors and museum readers. Nineteen halftone plates reproduce Renaissance panels and frescoes in dark, grainy monochrome: grouped figures in drapery, half-length portraits holding objects, and tiled interiors with receding architecture, useful for figure silhouettes and tonal textures.
