A scholarly history of French art theory from Poussin to Diderot, written by André Fontaine and published by Henri Laurens in Paris in 1909 for art historians and academy students, with twelve plates outside the text. The plates reproduce seventeenth- and eighteenth-century engravings: a half-length painter's portrait with an inscribed wall tablet, allegorical frontispieces where putti hold lettered cartouches and draped curtains, and crowded mythological compositions, useful as ready-made title panels and figure groups in dense line and mezzotint tone.
