The life of J. M. W. Turner, R.A.; founded on letters and papers furnished by his friends and fellow academicians
Walter Thornbury's biography of J. M. W. Turner, assembled from letters and recollections of the painter's friends and fellow academicians, reissued by Chatto & Windus in London in 1897 for art readers and collectors. The plates reproduce Turner's watercolours and chalk studies in muted ochre, rust and grey-green: hazy river panoramas, cathedral towers above rooftops, moored boats with small figures, and crowds massed along a quay at dusk, useful for soft atmospheric washes and loose architectural silhouettes.
