A descriptive museum catalogue of the South Kensington Museum's Italian medieval and Renaissance sculpture, compiled by J. C. Robinson with photographs by Charles Thurston Thompson and published by Chapman & Hall in London in 1862 for collectors, students and museum visitors. The plates are early photographic records of marble and terracotta reliefs, portrait busts, tomb fragments and carved ornament shot against plain grounds, useful for isolated object cut-outs, drapery and foliate carving detail, and profile portrait silhouettes; blank flyleaves supply aged paper textures.
