The cicerone; an art guide to painting in Italy, for the use of travellers and students;
Jacob Burckhardt's Der Cicerone in Blanche Smith Clough's English translation, issued in London by T. W. Laurie in 1908 as a travelling guide to Italian painting for tourists and art students. The plates are coarse-screen halftones of Renaissance and Baroque canvases—bathing nymphs, hunts, altarpiece groups, wooded backdrops—reduced to soft grey masses with blown highlights on flesh and near-black foliage, useful for murky tonal backgrounds and figure silhouettes.
