Die Baukunst nach den Grundsätzen der Alten
A German treatise on building according to ancient principles, written by the Berlin archaeologist and architecture professor Aloys Hirt and published in 1809 for architects, students and antiquarians. The plates are fine outline engravings of classical orders laid out as lettered and numbered figures: Corinthian and composite capitals, entablature and cornice profiles, pedestals and bases, coffered soffits and Greek key borders, with half of each element left in pure line and half filled with flat grey shading, offering ready-made ornament silhouettes and measured profile diagrams.
