A French translation of Jonathan Richardson's essays on the theory of painting and on connoisseurship, printed in Amsterdam by Herman Uytwerf in 1728 for readers, collectors and critics of art across the Continent. The plates in the index are the printer's letterpress ornaments: horizontal headpiece bands of symmetrical acanthus scrollwork framing a small grotesque mask, plus triangular tailpieces of looping strapwork and leaf clusters, usable as rules, dividers and chapter-end marks.
