Illustrations of China and its people : a series of two hundred photographs, with letterpress descriptive of the places and people represented.
John Thomson's four-volume photographic survey of China, published in London by Sampson Low in 1873 for British readers curious about the country's cities, trades and inhabitants. The plates are albumen photographs mounted on cream album pages, mixing wide panoramas of harbours, terraced hillsides and river towns with grouped portrait studies of workers and families, giving designers soft grey tonal ranges, generous mount borders and grid arrangements of small rectangular images.
