Illustrations of China and its people : a series of two hundred photographs, with letterpress descriptive of the places and people represented.

Thomson, J. (John), 1837-1921 · 1873 · London : Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle · 26 pictures

A four-volume photographic survey of China issued by the Scottish photographer John Thomson in London in 1873, pairing two hundred collotype plates with descriptive letterpress for British readers curious about the country and its inhabitants. The plates run to street traders, officials, boatmen and women in regional dress, temples, bridges and river towns, offering costume detail, architectural ornament and posed studio groupings in soft grey photographic tone; many index scans show only the blank guard leaves that faced each plate.
