Emblemata cvm aliqvot nvmmis antiqvi operis
An emblem book by the Hungarian humanist János Zsámboki (Sambucus), printed by Christopher Plantin in Antwerp in 1564 with woodcuts cut by Arnaud Nicolai, Cornelis Muller and Gerard Janssen van Kampen, addressed to Latin-reading scholars and collectors, and closing with plates of ancient coins. Each small scene—figures in landscapes, ruins, battles, serpents and beasts—sits inside a separate strapwork frame of grotesques, herms, vases and garlands, giving designers interchangeable borders, corner ornaments and compact narrative vignettes.
