Pierre Simon Laplace's Traité de mécanique céleste, printed in Paris by Crapelet for the booksellers Duprat and Courcier from 1798, a mathematical treatise on celestial mechanics, tides and capillarity written for astronomers and mathematicians. The plates are folding sheets of engraved line diagrams, each figure numbered and lettered, showing circles, tangents, force vectors, curve profiles and U-shaped capillary tubes, useful as sparse geometric line work, technical lettering and diagram grids; the covers supply plain calf and fillet borders.
