Labor and porcelain in Japan
A US consular report on Japanese labor, social classes and the pottery industry, compiled by consul-general Thomas B. Van Buren for the State Department and printed in Yokohama in 1882. Illustrations are hand-tinted studio photographs of posed figures — a court lady with fan, a samurai in lacquered armor, kneeling women, porters with a palanquin — with soft grey backdrops and selective washes of crimson and violet.
