Account of the discoveries at Pompeii : communicated to the Society of Antiquaries of London
An archaeological report by Sir William Hamilton on the excavations at Pompeii, read to the Society of Antiquaries of London and printed by Bowyer and Nichols in 1777, with plates engraved by James Basire for a scholarly antiquarian readership. The scans here are dominated by the volume's combed marbled endpapers—dense nonpareil arches in rust orange, slate blue, black and tan—alongside Basire's line engravings of Roman architecture, giving designers ready-made repeating pattern fields and period ornament.
