Salomon de Caus's treatise on hydraulic machines, waterworks, grottoes and fountains, printed in Frankfurt by Jan Norton in 1615 for engineers, garden designers and princely patrons. Alongside the machine plates, the book carries woodcut initials built from white foliate scrollwork on hatched grounds, some set in leaf-bordered squares, usable as drop caps, spot ornaments or tiling pattern units.
