A working manual of dyeing by F. J. Bird, issued in 1882 by Henry Carey Baird in Philadelphia and Sampson Low in London for practising dyers and mill chemists, with over eight hundred recipes and one hundred and seventy dyed samples of yarn and cloth mounted in the text. The plates are photographed swatches: small rectangles of wool and cotton in blacks, browns and dull purples, with plain, twill and herringbone weaves visible and loose threads at the cut edges, usable as woven textures, muted color chips, or specimen-card layouts on pale paper.
