A nomenclature of colors for naturalists : and compendium of useful knowledge for ornithologists
Robert Ridgway's 1886 color standard for naturalists, printed by John Wilson and Son and published in Boston by Little, Brown, gave ornithologists fixed names and hand-finished samples for describing plumage. The plates are hand-colored swatch blocks, stepped gray scales, and cut-out primary and secondary triangles with letterpress labels, usable as period color palettes, diagram forms, and specimen-card layouts.
