A 1591 Milanese treatise by the painter and theorist Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo, printed by Paolo Gottardo Ponzio, describing how the nine Muses should be depicted according to ancient Greek and Latin authors, written for working painters and sculptors. The plates here are small square woodcut initials in which letters are wrapped with roses, pansies, acanthus and trailing stems inside ruled borders, useful as coarse-printed drop caps, ornament motifs, or sources for redrawn floral letterforms.
