De re aedificatoria libri decem
Alberti's ten-book Latin treatise on architecture, edited by Eberhard Tappe and printed by Jacob Cammerlander at Strasbourg in 1541 for humanist readers, builders and patrons. The plates here are black woodcut initials with foliage and grotesque masks inside ruled boxes, and pale printed paper covers carrying repeating star-shaped blossoms and scrolling stems over a fine crosshatched ground, usable as tiling patterns, letterforms and aged paper grounds.
