Roger de Piles's 1681 treatise on the works of famous painters, printed in Paris by Nicolas Langlois for collectors and connoisseurs of painting. The plates here are typographic woodcut ornaments — triangular tailpieces of scrolling flowers, a footed vase of blooms, and a running border of rosettes and foliage — usable as page furniture, section breaks, and stamp-like floral motifs.
