André Félibien's dialogues on the lives and works of ancient and modern painters, printed in Paris in 1666 by Pierre le Petit for the court and learned readers of Louis XIV's academy circles. The plates here are typographic furniture rather than illustrations: woodcut headpieces of flowers massed in urns and heart-shaped sprays, an oval printer's device with a phoenix-like bird over a river town, and historiated initials carrying figures such as winged Time with a scythe — usable as frames, spot ornaments and drop caps.
