Luigi Scaramuccia's 1674 guide to Italian painting, printed in Pavia by Giovanni Andrea Magri, walks readers through the theory and practice of the art under the imagined tutelage of Raphael, with extracts from Leonardo's treatise, addressed to students and connoisseurs. The plates shown are square woodcut initials — D, N, R — set in dense laurel leaves and a five-petalled rose, heavily inked and roughly cut; usable as drop caps, monogram frames, or leaf-border motifs.
