Histoire de l'art chez les anciens
Winckelmann's history of ancient art in the French edition translated by Michel Huber and issued by Hendrik Jansen in Paris in 1793, addressed to antiquaries, collectors and artists studying Greek and Roman sculpture. The copperplate engravings show busts, draped and nude statues, herms and crowded sarcophagus reliefs, most set alone on blank paper with fine hatching that records drapery folds, curled hair and broken stone, giving designers isolated silhouettes and frieze strips ready to cut out.
