Idea del tempio della pittvra
Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo's Idea del tempio della pittura, printed by Paolo Gottardo Ponzio in Milan in 1590, is a painter's treatise on art theory written for artists and educated patrons. The plates run to a woodcut initial filled with leaves and buds cut by a diagonal bar, a profile portrait bust set in an oval laurel frame with ribbon tie, and a plain vellum board, giving designers ready initials, medallion frames and a blank aged ground.
