Johann Joachim Winckelmann's 1762 open letter on the excavations at Herculaneum, published in Dresden by George Conrad Walther for antiquarians and collectors of Greco-Roman art, with engraved work by Christian Friedrich Boëtius. The pictures indexed here are the binding's marbled papers: dense cells of black over red and ochre veining, giving designers ready-made stone-pattern textures, endpaper tiles, and dark organic backgrounds.
