Filippo Baldinucci's biographical history of Italian painters, sculptors and architects from Cimabue onward, printed in Florence by Santi Franchi in 1681 for antiquarians, collectors and artists tracing the revival of the arts. The illustrations are small woodcut initial capitals in which bold letterforms sit among hatched tulips, curling acanthus and ribbon-tied stems, useful as drop caps, display letters, or sources for coarse-line floral ornament that reproduces well at small size.
