Nouvelle découverte touchant la veüe
A short Paris optics treatise of 1668 in which Edmé Mariotte announced his discovery of the retinal blind spot, printed by Frédéric Léonard with a rebuttal by the anatomist Jean Pecquet, addressed to physicians and natural philosophers. The plates are spare line diagrams of eyeballs with sightlines converging on a point, joined by a foliate woodcut initial M, a winged lion of St Mark printer's device on a strapwork cartouche with banner motto, and a penned calligraphic bookplate.
