Lodovico Domenichi's Italian translation of Leon Battista Alberti's treatise on painting, De pictura, printed by Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari in Venice in 1547 for artists and lettered readers of the period. The plates are square woodcut historiated initials in which workmen and embracing figures in doublets and hose climb over and lean against the letterforms in open landscapes, useful for drop caps, figure-and-letter constructions, and coarse line-hatched figure studies.
