A scholarly collection of letters on painting, sculpture and architecture by artists of the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, edited by Giovanni Gaetano Bottari with Luigi Crespi and printed in Rome in 1754 by the heirs of Barbiellini for antiquarians and art historians. The pictures are letterpress printer's ornaments cut on wood: decorated initials, headpieces and tailpieces built from rococo cartouches, scrolled strapwork, winged cherub heads, paired griffins and hound-bodied sphinxes, flower swags and urns, with one vignette of a seated allegorical figure before buildings — usable as small frames, drop caps and rule dividers.
