Le vite de piv eccellenti architetti, pittori, et scvltori italiani : da Cimabve in sino à tempi nostri
Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Italian architects, painters and sculptors, printed in Florence by Lorenzo Torrentino in 1550 for readers of art and antiquity. The 85 images are woodcut initial letters set in square frames, each letter drawn in outline against curling vine scrolls, acanthus leaves, berries and rosettes — a usable alphabet for drop caps, monograms and borders.
