Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Italian architects, painters and sculptors, printed at Florence by the ducal press of Lorenzo Torrentino in 1550 for readers in courtly and artistic circles. The plates here are woodcut initial letters, each a square block of white letterform against foliage, grotesque masks, birds and berried vines, usable as drop caps, monograms or small ornamental panels.
