The grotesque in church art
Thomas Tindall Wildridge's 1899 antiquarian survey of grotesque carving in English churches, published in London by W. Andrews & Co. for readers of church history and ecclesiology. Line drawings copy misericords, corbels and bench-ends: a fox in friar's habit preaching to geese, beasts fighting, the Adoration of the Magi under gothic canopies, each rendered in hatched pen strokes with flat backgrounds.
