Guide to the Japanese textiles
A museum handbook to the Victoria and Albert's Japanese textile holdings, compiled by Albert J. Koop and A. D. Howell Smith and printed for H. M. Stationery Office in London in 1919 for curators, students and the textile trade. Halftone photographs record woven and dyed silks in close view: repeating floral and foliate grounds, phoenixes and karashishi, swastika lattice, clouds, bamboo and paulownia, all reduced to high-contrast light-on-dark pattern usable as tiling motifs, borders and textures.
