Gypsy sorcery and fortune telling, illustrated by numerous incantations, specimens of medical magic, anecdotes, and tales
Charles Godfrey Leland's 1891 folklore study of Romani charms, spells and fortune telling, issued in New York by Scribner's for English-speaking readers of popular ethnography. The plates here are large decorated initials cut in a Romanesque manner: white foliate strapwork, hounds, hares and perched birds knotted through the letterforms against hatched grounds, ready for drop caps, monograms and border motifs.
