Hadriani Iunii Emblemata : eiusdem Aenigmatum libellus
Latin emblem book with an appended volume of riddles by the Dutch humanist physician Hadrianus Junius, printed at Leiden in 1596 by the Plantin office of Franciscus Raphelengius for scholarly readers. The 61 small square woodcuts set single motifs — a crocodile in reeds, a snake coiled at a tree root, shepherds with dogs, a fruiting tree above a walled town — in hatched landscapes with hills, water and hard black borders, useful as compact vignettes, spot emblems and line-textured backgrounds.
