Handbook of heraldry : with instructions for tracing pedigrees and deciphering ancient mss. : rules for the appointment of liveries, &c
John Edwin Cussans's Handbook of Heraldry, published by Chatto & Windus in London in 1882, is a manual for antiquaries and genealogists tracing pedigrees, reading old manuscripts and assigning liveries. The wood-engraved cuts are small line shields showing ordinaries, quarterings, beasts and charges, with hatching and stippling standing in for tinctures — a stock of compact escutcheon outlines and pattern fills.
