A handbook of legendary and mythological art
A reference handbook of Christian and classical iconography compiled by Clara Erskine Clement and published in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin in 1890, aimed at American art students, travellers and gallery-goers identifying saints, gods and symbols in paintings. The illustrations are line engravings after medieval and Renaissance works, mostly single standing figures in heavy drapery with haloes, attributes and small narrative scenes at the feet, giving designers clean contour drawings of saints, martyrs' emblems and drapery folds.
