A handbook of legendary and mythological art
A reference handbook by Clara Erskine Clement, published in New York by Hurd and Houghton in 1872, cataloguing the saints, biblical figures and classical gods that appear in European painting and sculpture, written for art students, travellers and general readers. The wood-engraved outline figures copy medieval and Renaissance works, showing draped standing saints, haloed Christ figures, winged allegorical women and their identifying attributes, and supply clean linear silhouettes and drapery patterns for cutout, silhouette and emblem work.
