A German-language handbook of clinical microscopy by the Italian pathologist Giulio Bizzozero, published in Erlangen in 1883 for physicians, clinical chemists and forensic examiners working at the bedside and in the laboratory. The plates are line engravings of what the microscope shows: amoeboid cells, dividing nuclei, muscle and connective tissue fibres, bacterial chains and branching fungal threads, each keyed with italic letters and figure numbers, giving designers stippled organic shapes and fine parallel hatching.
