Heart of Europe

Cram, Ralph Adams, 1863-1942 · 1915 · New York, Scribner's · 36 pictures

An architectural survey by the American Gothic Revival architect Ralph Adams Cram, published by Scribner's in New York in 1915 for readers following the wartime damage to the churches and civic halls of northern France and Flanders. The plates are halftone photographs of Gothic exteriors — Beauvais choir buttresses, spired town halls, cloisters and porches — printed in warm grey-brown ink, useful for tracery silhouettes, flying-buttress patterns and street-level views of stonework.
