The Herald and genealogist
A Victorian antiquarian periodical on heraldry and family history, edited by John Gough Nichols and issued in London by John Bowyer Nichols and Sons from 1863 for genealogists, record scholars and armorial researchers. Wood-engraved line illustrations reproduce burgh and personal seals with Lombardic legends, quartered shields, crests, mantling and charges such as crescents, roses and chevrons, giving designers ready-made escutcheon outlines, circular seal borders and heraldic ornament.
