The Herald and genealogist
A Victorian heraldic and genealogical periodical edited by John Gough Nichols and issued in London from 1862 by John Bowyer Nichols and Sons, written for antiquaries, genealogists and heralds. The wood-engraved plates reproduce medieval seals and armorial shields in tight line and hatching, with legends running around seal rims, mitres, crests and charges such as crescents, crosses and fish, useful for crest and shield silhouettes, circular lettered borders and engraved texture.
