The Herald and genealogist
A serial of heraldic and genealogical scholarship edited by John Gough Nichols and issued in London by John Bowyer Nichols and Sons in 1870, aimed at antiquaries, family historians and officers of arms. The wood-engraved cuts show shields with chevrons, roses, checky fields, rampant lions, water-bars and martlets, plus circular seals framed by cable borders and gatehouse architecture, drawn in flat outline with hatched tinctures that read clearly as silhouettes or spot ornament.
