A Victorian heraldic and genealogical journal edited by John Gough Nichols and issued in London by John Bowyer Nichols and Sons in 1873, written for antiquaries, armorists and family historians. The wood-engraved cuts show shields singly and in quartered arrays, with crests, mottto scrolls, hatched tinctures and charges such as lions, stags, griffins, towers and shells, giving designers a stock of line-only escutcheon outlines, fill patterns and banner ribbons.
